Our Work

Delivering Practical Conservation That Lasts

Free The Tree Ltd exists to protect and restore the ecological integrity of Aotearoa’s landscapes—starting with Waiheke Island, the place we call home, and extending to its precious Hauraki Gulf neighbours.

Since 2020, we’ve successfully delivered over a dozen public, private, and community-led ecological contracts across Waiheke and the wider Hauraki Gulf archipelago, including Motutapu, Rakino, The Noises (Ruapuke/Maria Island), and Motukaha. Our work spans biosecurity compliance and enforcement, strategic weed and targeted pest control, full-scale ecological restoration, sensitive heritage site management (including ancient pā sites and globally significant conservation islands), and community-supported planting initiatives. From Council reserves to private islands, remote coastlines to sacred maunga, we deliver results effectively, professionally, and with an unwavering commitment to excellence.

We specialise in:

  • Delivering complex ecological maintenance and restoration across diverse island terrains and sensitivities.

  • Expert biosecurity compliance under the Biosecurity Act 1993 and the Regional Pest Management Plan.

  • Strategic community engagement that builds lasting trust and empowers long-term ecological outcomes.

  • Innovative problem-solving and technological integration, from advanced field mapping and data management (Airtable, CalTopo, ArcGIS) to pioneering new field techniques like drone-based applications.

  • Seamless cross-departmental and multi-stakeholder project delivery, working effectively across Council silos, with iwi partners, community trusts, and private landowners.

Our Waiheke-based team is practical, adaptable, and deeply respectful. We don’t overpromise. We listen intently. We plan meticulously, often drawing on disciplined strategic principles for effective solutions. And we arrive ready to work - with the right local people, the right tools, and the right mindset to achieve outstanding results efficiently and with a minimal carbon footprint.

This portfolio gives a snapshot of our past and current projects - each one chosen for its strategic importance, ecological value, and the enduring relationships it helped build.

If you’re looking for a long-term local partner who will protect your reputation, consistently exceed expectations, and get the job done right—Free The Tree is ready to lead.
