Tailored Solutions, Shared Futures: Free The Tree's Special Projects Across Waiheke and the Hauraki Gulf
The Challenge: Nurturing Diverse Ecological Aspirations Across a Treasured Landscape
Beyond large-scale contracts, private landowners, dedicated community conservation groups, and trusts across Waiheke Island and the wider Hauraki Gulf hold unique visions for restoring and protecting their precious corners of Aotearoa. These "special projects" require a partner offering not just ecological expertise, but also discretion, adaptability, deep understanding of local nuances (including Waiheke's complex iwi history involving Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki, Ngāti Paoa, and others), and genuine commitment to collaborative success.
The challenges are as diverse as the clients:
Private landowners on Waiheke, including high-net-worth individuals, seek to transform properties into thriving native habitats, enhancing ecological value for future generations, often requiring bespoke, confidential service.
Passionate community conservation groups need professional support to amplify volunteer efforts, tackle complex pest infestations, or undertake specialized restoration on limited budgets.
Culturally and ecologically sensitive sites like Motutapu Island (managed by Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki) or the Matietie Historic Reserve (with its Ngāti Paoa pā sites) demand intricate multi-stakeholder collaboration, often involving Mana Whenua, trusts, and government agencies.
Innovative funding and operational models are often vital to bring ambitious community-led restoration projects to life.
Our Approach: A Bespoke Blend of Expertise, Innovation, and Deep-Rooted Community Ethos
Free The Tree thrives on these unique challenges, bringing a client-centric philosophy and spirit of partnership to every special project:
Client-Focused Delivery: We listen intently to each client's specific wishes and vision, then provide detailed, transparent scoping studies with accurate cost estimates, consistently aiming to deliver work exceeding expectations, for private sanctuaries or community initiatives.
Discreet & Effective Habitat Restoration for Private Landowners: We offer confidential, high-quality ecological services to Waiheke landowners, enhancing their properties' ecological integrity and long-term value through bespoke native habitat restoration.
Empowering Community Conservation & Pioneering New Models:
We proudly partner with numerous community groups (including DOC-managed Te Matuku Bay Scenic Forest Reserve, Friends of Te Aroha, Friends of Newton Reserve, Awaawaroa Eco Village, Te Korowai o Waiheke), providing expert services that magnify their invaluable volunteer work.
Spotlight on Matietie Historic Reserve – A Groundbreaking Collaboration: After two years' dedicated preparation, Free The Tree is a key partner in an innovative project restoring the Matietie Historic Reserve, a site including three Ngāti Paoa pā sites and the popular Matiatia-Owhanake Walkway. In a groundbreaking funding model, funds raised by the Coastal Custodians community group (Matiatia) from the Perpetual Guardian Stout Trust, DOC, and Waiheke Local Board were matched dollar-for-dollar by individual Coastal Custodians members. The Hauraki Gulf Conservation Trust (HGCT) provides funding oversight, and Free The Tree, as the trusted local contractor, delivers eco-restoration services. This initiative aims to build a sustainable future for the Waiheke community and its visitors.
Technological Innovation at Matietie: Demonstrating commitment to cutting-edge solutions, Free The Tree and Coastal Custodians sourced and collaborated with specialist operator Island Solutions to pioneer Waiheke Island's first-ever public land use of drones for targeted invasive plant control, proving invaluable for treating challenging areas like cliffs and sensitive pā sites with enhanced efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
Deep Collaboration on Landmark Trust Projects:
Motutapu Island Restoration: Our significant three-year project on Motutapu Island involves four annual visits. This work occurs in close, respectful liaison with Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki as managing authority, alongside the Motutapu Restoration Trust and DOC, to achieve profound conservation outcomes on this historically and ecologically vital island.
Ongoing Guardianship of Maria/Ruapuke Island (The Noises): We continue dedicated work on this national seabird sanctuary, partnered with Auckland Council and The Noises Trust, protecting its unique biodiversity and historic conservation legacy.
Rooted in Community: Our Ethos in Action: Free The Tree’s commitment extends beyond contracts. Director Richard contributes to the region's conservation and community fabric as a Hauraki Gulf Conservation Trust Trustee. A Friend of the Waiheke Walking Festival, he secured Treescape sponsorship and regularly leads walks focusing on building confidence on NZ’s tracks and nature's mental health benefits. He also actively participates in Waiheke Collective meetings and Auckland Council’s annual Pestival event.
Key Outcomes & Impact: A Legacy of Enhanced Environments and Empowered Communities
